| Published: December 13, 2007 Collaborative work efforts across organizational and geographical boundaries have become an everyday phenomenon in the workplace. They are made possible by IT environments such as those provided by Windows® SharePoint® Services 3.0 and Microsoft® Office SharePoint Server 2007. Organizational groups that collaborate were quick to recognize the advantages offered by SharePoint environments, and have spurred adoptions. As a result, SharePoint deployments have tended to grow unfettered at the departmental level rather than under the control of IT management. This rapid and unpredicted growth, along with the number of IT components involved in the enablement and operation of SharePoint services, pose an IT management challenge. It is difficult for IT to monitor and effectively manage these environments. The SharePoint Monitoring Toolkit offers help. It contains two management packs for System Center Operations Manager 2007 that facilitate the management of SharePoint® environments of all sizes. - Windows® SharePoint Services 3.0 Management Pack

How the Management Packs Work The management packs work with System Center Operations Manager 2007. They monitor the health state of the components in a SharePoint environment that affect performance and availability. When there is an issue that may cause service or performance degradation, Operations Manager 2007 uses the management packs to detect the issue, alert system administrators to its existence, and facilitate diagnosis and corrective action. The elements that they monitor include: - Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 related services (Timer, Tracing, and Search)
- Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 related Events
- Web server applications such as Internet Information Services (IIS)
- IIS-related Events
- Microsoft SQL Server® database-related events
- Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Server performance
What’s New The SharePoint Monitoring Toolkit Management Packs replace similar existing packs. However, they have been engineered to take advantage of many of the new features offered by System Center Operations Manager 2007 and contain major improvements over previous packs. Improvements include: - A substantial increase in the number of rules, including the addition of performance rules
- New and improved reports
- Additional actions
- New views
- Elimination of backward compatibility dependencies
- Improved reliability
- Reduction of redundant information through tuning and event suppression

Documentation Each management pack comes with a guide that supplements System Center Operations Manager documentation. The guides include: - Getting started guidance

- Directions for using the Operations Manager management console
- An appendix that names and describes every rule in the pack
