Introduction

This guide is part of the Microsoft® Deployment Solution Accelerator, which is the next version of Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007. It takes the Image Engineering feature team through the process of using Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 during the Microsoft Deployment imaging process.

Note   In this document, Windows applies to the Windows Vista®, Windows® XP Professional, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, Windows Server® 2008, and Windows Server 2003 operating systems unless otherwise noted.

This guide describes how to customize reference images by customizing the task sequence; how to create custom scripts and customize existing scripts; how to configure and customize variables, location, role, and make and model; and how to configure and customize the imaging databases and custom images.

This guidance extends the guidance found in the Microsoft Deployment documents, Image Engineering Feature Team Guide , Workbench Imaging Guide , and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Imaging Guide.

Table 1 provides additional information on the reference guides that are available to assist the Image Engineering feature team in configuring and setting up Deployment Workbench, Systems Management Server 2003, and System Center Configuration Manager.

Guide the Image Engineering feature team through the process of using Microsoft Deployment, Systems Management Server 2003, and System Center Configuration Manager during the imaging process.

Prerequisites

The sections that follow provide the prerequisites for Deployment Workbench, System Center Configuration Manager, and Systems Management Server 2003.

Deployment Workbench

Using Deployment Workbench to deploy Windows operating systems requires personnel who understand and meet certain prerequisites. Those who execute this deployment process should be familiar with the following concepts and tools:

  • Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT) version 3.0.1

  • Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007

  • Windows Deployment Services

  • Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later

  • Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) version 2.0

Note   There is a known issue with deploying Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 images using Windows PE version 2.0. For available updates and workarounds, see the Microsoft Help and Support articles, “You cannot install Windows XP successfully after you use Windows Vista or Windows PE 2.0 to create partitions on a hard disk,” at https://support.microsoft.com/?id=931760 and “You cannot install Windows Server 2003 successfully after you use Windows Vista or Windows PE 2.0 to create partitions on a hard disk” at https://support.microsoft.com/?id=931761.

  • Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) version 5.0

  • Network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls

  • Networking services infrastructure, including Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), and remote access

  • Active Directory® directory service infrastructure, including logical and physical design of infrastructure

  • Server capacity planning

  • Target computer image creation

  • Automated application installation

Note   The Task Sequencer used in Microsoft Deployment deployments requires that the Create Global Object right be assigned to credentials used in running Deployment Workbench and the deployment process. This right is typically available to accounts with Administrator-level permissions (unless explicitly removed). The Specialized Security – Limited Functionality (SSLF) security profile removes the Create Global Object right and should not be applied to computers being migrated using Microsoft Deployment. For additional information, see the Windows Vista Security Guide at https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A3D1BBED-7F35-4E72-BFB5-B84A526C1565&displaylang=en.

System Center Configuration Manager

Using System Center Configuration Manager to deploy Windows operating systems requires personnel who understand and meet certain prerequisites. Those who execute this deployment process should be familiar with the following concepts and tools:

  • USMT version 3.0.1

  • System Center Operations Manager

  • Windows Deployment Services

  • Windows Server 2003 with SP1 or later

  • Windows PE version 2.0

  • ACT version 5.0

  • Network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls

  • Networking services infrastructure, including DNS, DHCP, WINS, and remote access

  • Active Directory infrastructure, including logical and physical design of infrastructure

Also, the SSLF security profile removes the Create Global Object right and should not be applied to computers being migrated using Microsoft Deployment.

Systems Management Server 2003

Installing, configuring, and using Systems Management Server 2003 for deploying the Windows Vista or Windows XP operating systems require personnel who understand and meet certain prerequisites. Those who execute this deployment process should be familiar with the following concepts and tools:

  • USMT version 3.0.1

  • Systems Management Server 2003 with SP2 or later

  • SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment (OSD) Feature Pack

  • System Center Operations Manager

  • Windows Deployment Services

  • Windows Server 2003 with SP1 or later

  • Windows PE version 2.0, supplied with Windows Vista for Windows Vista deployments

  • Windows PE version 1.5, supplied with the SMS 2003 OSD Feature Pack for Windows XP deployments

  • ACT version 5.0

  • CD image creation

  • Network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls

  • Networking services infrastructure, DNS, DHCP, WINS, and remote access

  • Active Directory infrastructure, including logical and physical design of infrastructure

Also, the SSLF security profile removes the Create Global Object right and should not be applied to computers being migrated using Microsoft Deployment.
