Microsoft Deployment Preparing for Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007
Preparing the Deployment Environment
Published: December 20, 2007

Before deploying images to target computers, ensure that the deployment environment is properly configured to run ZTI. Some of these steps might have already been completed. Skip steps that are complete.

To prepare the deployment environment to run ZTI with System Center Configuration Manager, complete the following steps:

  • Install System Center Configuration Manager.

  • Upgrade BDD 2007 to Microsoft Deployment, or install Microsoft Deployment.

Note   An upgrade path exists from BDD 2007 to Microsoft Deployment. For additional information on this feature, see the Getting Started Guide in Microsoft Deployment.

  • Enable Microsoft Deployment integration with the Configuration Manager console in System Center Configuration Manager.

  • Create the Microsoft Deployment deployment point.

Ensuring That the Required Infrastructure Exists

At this step in the planning process, ensure the required infrastructure exists to support the ZTI deployment process using System Center Configuration Manager.

For more information about ensuring that the required infrastructure exists, see the “Planning” section in the Infrastructure Remediation Feature Team Guide.

Configuring the Appropriate Processing Rules

At this step in the planning process, configure the appropriate processing rules based on the environment in the Microsoft Deployment database. The ZTI deployment process uses rules defined in the Microsoft Deployment database to configure target computers.

For more information about configuring the appropriate processing rules in the Microsoft Deployment database, see the following sections in the Deployment Customization Guide:

  • “Reviewing the Deployment Processing Rules”

  • “Selecting the Configuration Properties”

  • “Applying the Properties to Groups of Computers”

  • “Applying the Properties to Individual Computers”

Install System Center Configuration Manager

In most instances, System Center Configuration Manager will already be installed on the deployment server. In instances where this task has not yet been completed, and for more information on how to install System Center Configuration Manager on the deployment server, see the Configuration Manager Setup Overview.

Install Microsoft Deployment

In most instances, Microsoft Deployment will already be installed on the deployment server. In instances where this task has not yet been completed, and for more information on how to install Microsoft Deployment on the deployment server, see the section “Installing Microsoft Deployment” in the Getting Started Guide.

Note   For integrated System Center Configuration Manager support with Deployment Workbench, install Microsoft Deployment on each computer running the Configuration Manager console. This allows you to run the Configuration Manager 2007 Integration option and specify data for Microsoft Deployment Toolkit packages.

Enable Configuration Manager Console Integration

Before the deployment team can use the System Center Configuration Manager integration features of Microsoft Deployment, run the Configure Configuration Manager 2007 Integration script. The Configure Configuration Manager 2007 Integration script copies the appropriate Microsoft Deployment System Center Configuration Manager integration files to the Configuration Manager 2007_root (where Configuration Manager 2007_root is the folder in which System Center Configuration Manager is installed). The script also adds Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) classes for the new Microsoft Deployment Toolkit custom actions. The classes are added by compiling a new Managed Object Format (MOF) file that contains the new class definitions.

To run the Configure Configuration Manager 2007 Integration script

  1. Click Start, and then point to All Programs. Click Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, and then click Configure ConfigMgr 2007 Integration.

The Configure Configuration Manager 2007 Integration script starts.

  2. In the Site Server Name dialog box, type ConfigMgr_server_name (where ConfigMgr_server_name is the name of the System Center Configuration Manager server on which to install Microsoft Deployment integration), and then click OK.

  3. In the Site Code dialog box, type ConfigMgr_site_code (where ConfigMgr_site_code is the System Center Configuration Manager site code to install Microsoft Deployment integration), and then click OK.

Note   The Configuration Manager console should be closed while running this option.
