Uninstalling DPM

Published : April 8, 2005 | Updated : August 17, 2005

When you uninstall DPM, you can choose whether to remove or retain your existing shadow copies and replicas. To continue accessing shadow copies on the DPM server after you uninstall DPM, you must choose to retain your data protection configuration during the uninstallation.

Important

If you plan to retain your existing data protection configuration after uninstalling DPM, disable end-user recovery on the DPM server and run synchronization jobs for each volume in your protection groups before you start the uninstallation. These steps help ensure that users to whom you deny access to files on the file server cannot access the replicas of those files on the DPM server.

Setup uninstalls only the DPM application. Setup does not remove:

  • DPM prerequisite software. To uninstall DPM prerequisite software, use Add or Remove Programs after you complete the DPM uninstallation. Uninstall prerequisite software in the following order:

    1. SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services

    2. Internet Information Services (IIS)

    3. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (MICROSOFT$DPM$)

  • File agents. If you want to use DPM Administrator Console to uninstall file agents deployed on protected file servers, you must do so before you start the uninstallation. Alternatively, you can use Add or Remove Programs to uninstall file agents from the file servers locally after you complete the DPM uninstallation.

  • User settings. To remove user settings, delete the folder Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager after you complete the DPM uninstallation.

To uninstall DPM

  1. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Change or Remove Programs.

  2. Under Currently installed programs, select Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2006, and then click Change/Remove.

The Setup wizard starts in uninstallation mode.

  3. On the Uninstall Options page, select either Remove data or Retain data, and then click Next.

  4. On the Summary of Options page, click Uninstall.

  5. When uninstallation is complete, click Close.
