How to install a file agent

Published : April 8, 2005 | Updated : August 17, 2005

Before you can start protecting data, you must install a file agent on each of the file servers that contain data that you want to protect. After the file agent is installed on a file server, the server is referred to as a protected file server in the Management task area. However, the data sources on the file server are not protected until you add them to a protection group.

To install a file agent on a file server

  1. In DPM Administrator Console, click Management on the navigation bar, and then click the Agents tab.

  2. On the Actions pane, click Install.

The Install Agents wizard starts and displays a list of available file servers. If this is the first time you have used the wizard, DPM queries Active Directory to obtain a list of potential file servers. After the first agent installation, DPM displays the list of file servers in its database, which is updated once each day by the auto discovery process.

  3. On the Select servers page, select one or more file servers (50 maximum) from the Server name list, click Add, and then click Next.

If you know the name of a specific file server on which you want to install the file agent, you can quickly find and select the server by typing the name of the server in the Server name box, and then clicking Add. DPM will query Active Directory for the server, and add it to the Selected servers list. If you do not know the name of the server, browse through the list to find the server.

    Note

The Advanced button on the Select servers page is only enabled when there is more than one version of a file agent available for installation on the file servers. If enabled, you can use this option to install a previous version of the file agent that was working before you updated to the most recent version.

  4. On the Enter credentials page, type the user name and password for a domain account that is a member of the local administrators group on all selected servers.

  5. On the Choose restart method page, select the method that you will use to restart the file servers after the file agent is installed and then click Next.

    "Important

The file servers must be restarted before you can start protecting data. This restart is necessary to ensure that the file agent is installed correctly. After restart, it may take a few more minutes before DPM can contact the file server because of the time required to start services.

  6. On the Summary page, click Install Agents to proceed with installation.

A status box is displayed to indicate whether the installation is successful. You cannot close this box until after installation has succeeded or failed. For information about resolving agent installation failures, see the “Troubleshooting” chapter in the DPM Operations Guide.
