What is auto discovery?

Once each day, Data Protection Manager (DPM) queries Active Directory to discover new file servers, and new, deleted, or remapped volumes and/or shares on the currently protected file servers. This process is referred to as auto discovery.

If new file servers are discovered, DPM generates a “New servers found” alert. This alert provides information about file servers that have been discovered in the same domain as the DPM server during the past seven days. In the Monitoring task area on the Alerts tab, select the alert and review the details. In the Details pane, click Details to display the list of new file servers. To start protecting data on a new file server, install a file agent on the server and then add the data sources to a new or existing protection group.

If new or deleted volumes or shares are discovered, DPM generates a “New or changed members found” alert. DPM marks the affected data sources as “pending” group members. In the Protection task area, you can review pending members and update your protection groups.

By default, auto discovery runs at 1:00 A.M. each day. You can modify the auto discovery schedule to better accommodate your network traffic flow or other requirements.
