Resolving issues with agents

Before you start troubleshooting, consider whether any of the following blocking issues may apply to your situation. For more information about resolving issues with agents, see the “Managing Servers” and “Troubleshooting” chapters in the DPM Operations Guide.

DPM File Agent will not install on a file server

  • Is the file server connected to the network and can it be remotely accessed from the DPM server?

Both the DPM server and the file server must be connected to the network during installation of a file agent.

  • Is the file server in the same Active Directory domain as the DPM server?

The DPM server and the file servers that it is intended to protect must be in the same domain.

  • Is a firewall enabled on the file server that may be blocking requests from the DPM server?

If a firewall is enabled, you need to configure the firewall to allow communication between the DPM server and the file server.

  • Has a previous version of the file agent already been installed on the file server?

You cannot install two versions of the file agent on the same file server.

  • Is case-insensitive file naming disabled on the file server?

DPM does not support protection of file servers on which case-insensitive file naming is disabled. Enable case-insensitive file naming and then install the file agent.

  • Is the Remote Registry service running on the file server?

The Remote Registry service must be running before you can install a file agent. In Administrative Tools, start the Remote Registry service and then install the file agent.

DPM File Agent will not uninstall from a file server

  • Is the file server disconnected from the network?

To uninstall a file agent, the file server must be connected to the network.

  • Was the file server renamed or moved to another Active Directory domain after the file agent was installed?

To uninstall a file agent, the file server must have the same name and be in the same domain as it had when the file agent was installed.

DPM File Agent is incompatible with DPM or other software

  • Did you upgrade the DPM software without updating the file agent?

To determine if an agent update is available, check the Agents tab in the Management task area.
