Modifying Workloads

Published : September 27, 2005

DPM offers several methods that you can use to modify protection workloads and thereby improve performance. Table 3.4 lists the methods you can use to modify protection workloads and indicates what you can expect from each.

Table 3.4   Methods for Modifying Protection Workloads

Method

Impact

Using network bandwidth usage throttling

Jobs use less bandwidth, but take longer to complete

Using on-the-wire compression

Reduces size of data transfer, but increases CPU utilization on the DPM server and the protected file servers

Staggering synchronization start times

Balances the loads of synchronization jobs across protection groups

Scheduling consistency checks during off peak hours

Prevents DPM from interfering with regular business use of protected file servers

Creating replicas manually

Replica creation may be faster; no performance load on file server or network resources.
