Agentless Monitoring with the Virtual Server 2005 R2 Management Pack

In an agentless management scenario, MOM does not install software on the computer that you want to manage. Instead, the MOM agent, which runs locally in the MOM Management Server runtime, collects data from the managed computer. The Virtual Server 2005 R2 Management Pack does not support management of agentless computers. To monitor Virtual Server and virtual machines using this Management Pack, you must install a MOM agent on the host operating system.

For optimal monitoring of virtual machines, it is recommended that you also install a MOM agent on each guest operating system. This is not required for monitoring virtual machines through the Virtual Server 2005 R2 Management Pack. However, three of the Management Pack reports—Virtual Machine Details, Virtualization Candidates, and Performance History—require a MOM agent running inside the virtual machine. In addition, a MOM agent can provide more comprehensive monitoring of the health and performance of the guest operating system using the Windows Servers Base Operating System Management Pack. For more information, see Deploying the Management Pack.
