Installing Additional Management Servers

You might want to install additional Management Servers to provide for agent failover. With agent failover, if a Management Server becomes unavailable for any reason, the agents on its managed computers can report to another Management Server in the same management group until their primary Management Server is available again.

If you plan to manage a large number of computers, you can also install multiple Management Servers, and even multiple management groups. This allows you to distribute the managed computers and balance the workload within your MOM environment.

After you have installed the first Management Server, you can install up to 10 additional Management Servers in the same management group, all sharing the same MOM database. In the scenario for this chapter, you install a second Management Server (MS02) for the management group (MgmtGrp01).

To install additional Management Servers, follow the steps described in the "Installing the First Management Server" section earlier in this chapter.

Important

When you install additional Management Servers, ensure that you:

  • Select This component will not be available for the MOM 2005 Database.

  • Reference the same MOM database that you used for the first Management Server.

  • Use the same Data Access Server account that you used for the MOM database and the first Management Server. You can use a different MOM Management Server Action account for each Management Server.

You can install additional MOM Administrator consoles and MOM Operator consoles on the additional Management Servers. However, you can administer any Management Server in the management group from a single MOM Administrator console, and monitor all computers in a management group from a single MOM Operator console.
