Installing the First Management Server

After you have installed the MOM database, move to a different computer to install the first Management Server (MS01 in Figure 1 earlier in this chapter).

You can install the MOM Administrator console and the MOM Operator console on the same computer as a Management Server, or you can install the consoles on one or more separate computers and remotely connect to a Management Servers in the management group. For instructions about installing the consoles on a separate computer, see the "Installing the MOM Administrator and MOM Operator consoles" section later in this chapter.

If you want to install the MOM Administrator console and the MOM Operator console on the Management Server, it is recommended that you set your display resolution to 1024  768, with 24-bit color.

If you want to install the MOM 2005 Web Console Server, you must install it on the Management Server. You can access the MOM 2005 Web console from a remote computer by using a supported browser.

To install the first Management Server

  1. Log on to the computer on which you want to install the Management Server using an account with administrative credentials. This account should also have at least "db_owner" access to the OnePoint database and "DBO" access to the master and msdb databases on the MOM Database Server.

  2. On the MOM 2005 product CD, double-click setup.exe.

  3. In the Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Setup Resources dialog box, click Install Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 to start the MOM 2005 Setup Wizard.

  4. On the Installation Options page, select Custom.

  5. On the Custom Setup page, do the following:

    • Expand MOM 2005 Database, and then click This component will not be available.

    • [Optional] If you do not want to install the MOM Administrator console and the MOM Operator console on the same computer, expand MOM 2005 User Interfaces, and then click This component will not be available.

    • [Optional] If you want to install the MOM 2005 Web console, expand MOM 2005 Web Console, and then click This component will be installed on local hard disk. You can install the Web console only on a Management Server.

    • [Optional] If you want to install the MOM Connector Framework (MCF), expand MOM Connector Framework, and then click This component will be installed on local hard disk. You can install the MCF only on a Management Server.

    • [Optional] If you want to install the MOM Product Connector (MMPC), expand MOM Product Connector, and then click This component will be installed on local hard disk. You must select the MCF to be installed in order to install the Product Connector. You can install the MOM Product Connector only on a Management Server.

    Note

Do not install the Microsoft Connector Framework or the MOM Product Connector under the MOM 2005 Management Server component at this time. These components are required only for tiered management groups and, by default, they are not installed. For more information, see Chapter 9 "Creating Multitiered Management Groups."

  6. The Prerequisite Check page indicates whether you have met the requirements for installing the MOM database.

  7. On the MOM Database Server Instance page, type the name of the SQL Server instance on which the MOM database is installed.

    Note

If the MOM database is installed on the default SQL Server instance, you only need to type the computer name. If the MOM database is installed on a non-default instance, type the computer name and the instance name, <computer name>\<SQL Server instance name>.

MOM connects to the MOM database by using OLE DB. MOM uses SQL Server port 1433 by default. If you use a different SQL Server port, you must change the SQL Server port value on this page.

  8. On the Management Server Action Account page, enter the account that you want the Management Server to use to install agents on remote computers. If you are using this account to install agents on remote computers, it must have administrative privileges on all target computers.

  9. On the Data Access Server Account page, enter the account that you want MOM to use for the Data Access Server (DAS) to communicate with the database.

    Important

You must use the same DAS account that you used to install the MOM database. It is recommended that you use a different account than the one that you used for the MOM Management Server Action Account.

  10. On the Ready to Install page, click Install.
