Troubleshoot MOM Upgrade Errors

This section provides troubleshooting information for issues that might occur when you are upgrading MOM components to MOM 2005.

Event ID: 9200 Malformed Packet

When performing a side-by-side upgrade from MOM 2000 SP1 to MOM 2005, both a MOM 2000 SP1 DCAM and a MOM 2005 Management Server exist on the network. Agents that are upgraded to MOM 2005 can then be managed by the MOM 2005 Management Server. If an agent is still managed by a MOM 2000 SP1 DCAM after the agent is upgraded, the following Event ID 9200 error can occur repeatedly:

The socket server on port 1270 received a malformed packet. This may indicate a possible hacking attempt. The binary data for this event contains the data received.

Solution

To avoid this error, do not upgrade the agents that report to the DCAM until all DCAMs within the MOM 2000 SP1 configuration group are upgraded to MOM 2005 Management Servers.

Recovering Agents After MOM 2000 SP1 DCAM Is Deleted

If you decide to install a new MOM 2005 Management Server instead of upgrading a MOM 2000 SP1 DCAM, the recommended method is to install the MOM 2005 Management Server on a separate server. Using this method in a large environment allows the agents to go through the upgrade process over a period of time. A MOM 2005 agent can belong to both a MOM 2000 SP1 DCAM and a MOM 2005 management group.

If the MOM 2000 SP1 DCAM is deleted before the agents are upgraded, it is possible to recapture the agents so that they know that the new MOM 2005 Management Server as their old DCAM.

Solution

To redirect MOM 2000 SP1 agents to a MOM 2005 Management Server, perform the following procedure.

To redirect MOM 2000 SP1 agents to a MOM 2005 Management Server
  1. Install a MOM 2005 Management Server. Give the new server the same name as the server that hosted the MOM 2000 SP1 DCAM.

  2. After the installation is complete, open the MOM Administrator console. Expand the Administration node, and then select Global Settings.

  3. In the details pane, select Management Servers.

  4. On the Agent Install tab, clear the Reject new manual agent installations check box.

  7. Right-click the Management Pack folder, and click Commit Configuration Change.

  8. Stop and start the MOM Service.

  9. Check that all MOM 2000 SP1 agents are listed in Pending Actions. Select all and click Approve.
