How to Create a New SMS 2003 Custom Report

The following procedure provides the steps necessary to create a new SMS report. For a detailed procedure that shows how to create a new SMS report using a real-world scenario, see Create a New SMS 2003 Report in Appendix E.

Procedure

To create a new report

  1. In the SMS 2003 console tree, navigate to the Reports node:

    Systems Management Server

└ Site Database (site code - site name)

        └ Reporting

          └ Reports

  2. Right-click the Reports node, point to New, and then click Report to open the Report Properties dialog box for the new report.

  3. In the Name text box, type a name for the report.

  4. In the Category text box, select one of the predefined report categories or type in the name of your custom report category.

  5. In the Comment text box, type an appropriate comment for the new report.

  6. Click Edit SQL Statement to open the Report SQL Statement dialog box. A default SQL query statement populates the SQL statement text box. Replace this query with a new one that retrieves the desired data.

  7. Click Prompts to create a prompt that requests from the user to enter a value for a required parameter prior to running the report. For example, a report that retrieves hardware inventory for a given computer would prompt the user for the computer name prior to running the report.

  8. Click OK twice, click the Links tab, and then specify whether a report link is defined. You can link to another report, computer details, status message details, or to a Web page.
