Windows NT 4.0 Low Rights Installation Issues

Low rights installation refers to the situation where the logged-on user does not have sufficient rights to complete an installation of Office XP. This is particularly problematic for SMS when the installation requires a restart (in the case of SFU installations) where the security context of the installation is lost during the restart. This scenario occurs for Windows NT 4.0 computers installing Office XP if both of the following are true:

  • The logged-on user is not an administrator on the computer

  • The Office XP installation is a clean install or an upgrade from a version of Office prior to Office 2000 Public Update 1 (because Office 2000 Public Update 1 includes SFU).

You can use the Elevated Rights Deployment Wrapper (Run_once.exe) to install Office XP in this scenario. The Elevated Rights Deployment Wrapper is typically used to deploy Office XP to a locked-down computer that is running Windows NT Workstation 4.0. You can use the Elevated Rights Deployment Wrapper with applications that require a restart during installation and elevated user rights following the restart. With this tool, the post-restart work can be integrated with SMS for both elevated rights and status reporting. Check the Systems Management Server Downloads Web site at https://www.microsoft.com/smserver/downloads/20/default.asp for this tool.
