Resource Requirements

The type of resources required to author a Management Pack vary by the part of the Management Pack being developed and the level of the Management Pack

Health model:   Producing a health model requires significant product expertise about the application to be monitored by the Management Pack.

Level 1 Management Pack:   Translates the health model into a Management Pack. This does not require technical skills in addition the ability to use the MOM consoles.

Level 2 Management Pack: Requires all Level 1 technical skills, plus the ability to produce Management Pack reports. The author must be able to write Structured Query Language (SQL) queries, and have some familiarity with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET.

Level 3 Management Pack: Generates more complicated state monitoring and the associated service discovery. Requires script development technical ability. Similarly, sophisticated script-based tasks require the same technical skill set.

Level 4 Management Pack: Involves more details than a Level 3 Management Pack. More expertise may not be required, but certainly more effort is required to produce additional, complex scripts.

The Management Pack Costing Tool is available through the Microsoft Management Alliance at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=34624. It includes calculations to estimate the resources required for each phase of the Management Pack development process.
