Backup and Recovery

Ensuring that SMS site servers continually operate without disruption is critical to the organization's daily operation. Because computers can fail unexpectedly for various reasons, such as hardware failure or software corruption, organizations must be prepared for a quick site recovery.

To be prepared, SMS provides functionality that you can use to back up and recover a site. You can back up the site's data on a regular basis and then use recovery and repair tools to restore that shadow copy backup and to recover the site to its original state. The backup and recovery feature ensures that the site loses minimum amount of data and that the site continues to operate properly after it is recovered.

For more information about backup and recovery, see Chapter 13, "Planning for Backup and Recovery." See also Chapter 15, "Backup and Recovery," in the Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 Operations Guide.
