NetBIOS Requirements

This section describes NetBIOS requirements for browsing and WINS in SMS 2003.

The Windows Computer Network Browser service ("browsing") is required if any one of the following is true:

• SMS is running in standard security mode.

• Some SMS clients are running the Legacy Client.

SMS 2003 requires WINS if any one of the following is true:

• SMS is running in standard security mode.

• Some SMS clients are running the Legacy Client.

• The Active Directory schema has not been extended for SMS.

• Your SMS hierarchy is distributed across different Active Directory forests.

Also, if any SMS sites in your hierarchy span more than one Active Directory domain, you must configure the DNS-suffix search order of client systems to include the DNS suffixes of all domains with SMS clients or servers. This is configured in Windows Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service. For information, see your Windows documentation.

If Active Directory is not enabled, or if the Active Directory schema is not extended for the site, you must enable WINS. SMS management points and SMS server locator points require registration in the WINS database. Although stand-alone management points are automatically registered in WINS, you must manually register the following types of site systems in WINS:

• Server locator point

• Management point in a Network Load Balancing cluster

You can disable browsing and WINS if all of the following are true:

• Active Directory is implemented in your environment.

• The Active Directory schema is extended for SMS.

• All SMS clients are running the Advanced Client.

• You have no secondary sites in Windows NT 4.0 domains.

• You have no secondary sites in a forest that is different from the forest of their parent site.

• You have no SMS 2.0 child sites.

• SMS is running in Advanced Security mode.
