Capacity Planning for SMS Component Servers

After you have completed the pre-planning phase, by using the methods described in Chapter 7, the "The Pre-Planning Phase" section and after you have designed your Microsoft® Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 sites and hierarchy, your next planning step is to develop a model for server sizing, performance, and capacity planning. Many of the performance issues described about in this chapter apply to various components of your overall network configuration, including server performance, network performance, overall SMS performance, and operating system performance. Performance issues that relate to a specific component of your network configuration refer to that component directly, for example, server performance instead of just performance. You perform the tasks that are described in this chapter before you deploy your SMS site so that you can avoid performance issues in production. However, you should also consider these tasks to be ongoing administrative responsibilities that can keep your SMS implementation running optimally.

In This Chapter

  • Introduction to Modeling for Sizing and Capacity Planning

  • Performance and Capacity Planning

  • SMS Activities That Affect SMS Server Performance

  • Sizing SMS Component Servers

This chapter includes an overview of SMS server sizing, capacity planning, and performance issues that you should be aware of, and it provides you with some tools that can assist you when you plan for server performance and capacity. Sizing and capacity planning guidelines include:

  • Being aware of how data flows in the SMS hierarchy.

  • Ensuring that the actual performance load that SMS generates is effectively managed by the hardware that is in use.

  • Building SMS component servers with as much fault-tolerant hardware as economically possible.

  • Ensuring that your capacity plan can adapt when your organization grows and changes.

This chapter represents one integral part of the planning process that begins with Chapter 7, "The Pre-Planning Phase." Understanding the basic concepts of SMS sites, features, and clients helps you generate a successful sizing plan. To benefit most from this chapter, you should be familiar with the following chapters in this book:

  • Chapter 2, "Understanding SMS Sites"

  • Chapter 3, "Understanding SMS Features"

  • Chapter 4, "Understanding SMS Clients"
