Site Configuration

A new site must be configured after SMS 2003 has been installed. You begin site configuration by defining site characteristics and configuring site systems at a single site. You build an SMS site hierarchy after you configure individual sites, by establishing communications between sites and attaching primary sites to form the site-reporting structure that you designed in the planning phase.

For more information, see Chapter 15, "Deploying and Configuring SMS Sites."

Site Boundaries

SMS 2003 site boundaries are defined by IP subnet or Active Directory site name and can be managed by Active Directory site names instead of, or in addition to, IP subnets.

Roaming boundaries enable SMS to provide software distribution to roaming Advanced Clients. Using roaming boundaries, an SMS Advanced Client computer can be moved from one location to another in an organization and still be managed by SMS. Roaming boundaries allow clients from within site boundaries to use site distribution points as their local distribution points.

The Advanced Client is assigned to a site even if it does not currently reside within that site's roaming boundaries. The Advanced Client is not assigned to a site if it is not set to automatically determine a site and is not set to a specific site. Advanced Clients look in the Active Directory to match site boundaries.

For more information, see Chapter 2, "Understanding SMS Sites," and Chapter 10, "Planning Your SMS Deployment and Configuration."

Client Configuration

Legacy Client computers compare their SMS configuration against the client access point (CAP) settings each time they are rebooted and every 25 hours. The comparison consumes some resources; however, there is more substantial activity if software changes are required. Advanced Clients check for these configuration settings when they check for advertisements. In addition, Advanced Clients use management points, not CAPs.
