access To connect to a resource, either remotely (such as to a file share or the named pipe for a service) or locally (such as to a file, directory, WMI class, WMI instance, or database). See also Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI).

access account A user or user group account that is given access to a package on a distribution point. Access accounts are used for security to specify which users or user groups will be permitted to access the package to run advertised programs. See also advertised program; distribution point; package.

access control entry (ACE) An entry in an object's discretionary access control list (DACL) that grants permissions to a user or group. An ACE is also an entry in an object's system access control list (SACL) that specifies the security events to be audited for a user or group. See also access control list (ACL); security descriptor.

access control list (ACL) A list of security protections that apply to an entire object, a set of the object's properties, or an individual property of an object. There are two types of access control lists: discretionary and system. See also access control entry (ACE); security descriptor.

account A security element that verifies the identity of a user or computer. An account has an associated name and password as well as group memberships, privileges, and constraints. See also privilege.

account expiration A time limit that is applied to the life of an account, so that it can be used only for a predetermined period of time. See also account.

account management The process of minimizing security risks to accounts by ensuring that strong passwords are used and that unused accounts are removed. Account management also includes adding, modifying, and deleting accounts; changing rights; and resetting passwords. See also account; strong password.

ACE See definition for access control entry (ACE).

ACL See definition for access control list (ACL).

Active Directory The Windows-based directory service. Active Directory stores information about objects on a network and makes this information available to users and network administrators. Active Directory gives network users access to permitted resources anywhere on the network using a single logon process. It provides network administrators with an intuitive, hierarchical view of the network and a single point of administration for all network objects.

address An object that connects sites to other sites and specifies how SMS should use those connections. See also SMS site.

Advanced Client An SMS 2003 client that is secure and easy to administer. The Advanced Client is optimized for software distribution to mobile and remote computers. See also SMS Administrator console; Legacy Client.

Advanced Client policy Configuration details for the Advanced Client that are provided after client installation. See also Advanced Client; management point.

Advanced Program-to-Program Communication (APPC) An IBM Systems Network Architecture communications method that uses the LU 6.2 protocol to establish, manage, and terminate network communication between programs in a distributed computing environment.

advertise The process of making a program available to members of a collection. See also advertised program; assigned program.

advertised program A program that has been advertised to a collection, but that clients are not required to run. See also advertise; assigned program.

advertisement A notification that the site server sends to the client access points (CAPs) specifying that a software distribution program is available for clients. See also advertise; client access point (CAP); collection; package; site server; software distribution.

agent See definition for client agent.

alert An audible or visual alarm that signals an error or serves as a warning.

aliasing In software metering, a process that enables a program to run and be monitored as another program that is already a registered product. See also software metering.

APPC See definition for Advanced Program-to-Program Communication (APPC).

architecture A structure that records information about an object. There are different architectures for different objects. Each object is composed of groups that contain attributes. An example of an architecture is the Systems architecture.

assigned management point The default management point of the site to which the Advanced Client is assigned, as defined in the management point properties. Also known as a home management point. See also Advanced Client; management point; proxy management point; resident management point.

assigned program A program that has been advertised to a collection and is mandatory to run. See also advertise; advertised program; assigning; collection.

assigned site A site to which the client computer is currently assigned. This is typically one site, but an SMS client can be assigned to multiple sites. See also SMS site.

assigning In Windows 2000, Windows XP, the Windows Server 2003 family, and Systems Management Server (SMS), to deploy a program to members of a group, where installation of the program is mandatory. See also advertise; advertised program; assigned program; collection.

assignment See definition for site assignment.

asynchronous RAS sender See definition for sender.

attribute A name or value that is used to query the SMS site database. Also known as a property. For example, the Disk attribute class contains attributes such as Manufacturer, Model, and Name. See also attribute class; SMS site database.

attribute class A container object that groups related attributes within an object type. See also attribute.

authentication The process by which the system verifies that an account is being accessed by an authorized user, computer, service, or process. A user's name and password are compared against an authorized list. If the system detects a match, access is granted to the extent specified in the permissions list for that user. See also password; permission.
