Discovering Resources and Deploying Clients

Microsoft® Systems Manager Server (SMS) 2003 discovery methods are used individually or in combination to identify resources in your organization. The discovery methods that are used depend on which versions of the Microsoft Windows® operating systems, network protocols, and other resources are used in your environment.

SMS client installation methods are used to deploy the SMS client software to computers that you want to manage with SMS. The variety of client installation methods provided by SMS 2003 gives you flexibility to use the most appropriate method or set of methods for your organization. For conceptual information about discovery and client installation methods, see Chapter 4, "Understanding SMS Clients." For information about planning which discovery and client installation methods to use, see Chapter 10, "Planning Your SMS Deployment and Configuration."

Note:

  • The terms SMS client, Advanced Client, and Legacy Client are frequently used to refer to either a client computer that has the SMS client software installed on it or to the SMS client software itself.
