Understanding data flow can help when planning your Microsoft Office Enterprise Project Management (EPM) Solution deployment. Significant changes have been made in the EPM Solution architecture for the release of Microsoft Office Project Server 2007. These changes can result in noteworthy performance improvements over previous versions.

A new queuing service allows for finer control of bits flowing to the server. All data is sent through the queue, and the administrator can control which types of jobs have priority. In previous versions, the Views Notification service was often resource-intensive and could at times represent a bottleneck in the system. The Views Notification service has been eliminated.

Data for projects published to Office Project Server 2007 is cached on first publication. This means that subsequent publications and openings of the project only require that differences be updated. Latency and bandwidth are still considerations when planning your deployment; however, the queuing and caching of data gives you more leeway in these areas.

Performance for OLAP cube building has also been improved. Project data is stored in the Reporting Database and used by SQL Analysis Services for cube building. The information is available at the time of a request for a cube. In the past, all of the information would be assembled at the time the cube building process was scheduled. This is no longer the case; the information is already available in the Reporting database.
