Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 enables custom audience targeting for content and sites. The purpose is to define audiences and content that are relevant to a user or group. As a server or site administrator, you can define audiences and content for a specific set of users or group. You can define target audiences based on properties, organizational relationships, distribution lists, and SharePoint groups.

For more information about target audiences, see Plan for audiences.

Once you specify target audiences, you can configure Web Parts to conditionally display content for users or groups that are members of the target audience. You can also customize content for users in many ways by using different Web Parts. One of the best ways to put content in site collection pages is by using the Content Query Web Part.

The Content Query Web Part is provided by default for certain template pages, such as portal sites and team sites, and it can customize content as follows:

  • By grouping results by options or audience. It is often used to target both by Web Part and by list item.

  • By displaying list items from multiple hierarchical levels. It includes better rendition of audience information.

  • By showing specific list items to specific audiences. This way, even when those list items appear in Web Parts or pages, only the individual list item is targeted and not the entire page or Web Part.

Displaying targeted content on SharePoint sites

Use the following procedure to display targeted content using a Content Query Web Part.

Display targeted content using a Content Query Web Part

  1. Navigate to the Web Parts page, add a Content Query Web Part, and modify the Web Part as follows:

    1. In the Query section, change List Type to Document Library.

    2. In the Query section, in the Audience Targeting section, select Apply audience filtering, and then click OK.

  2. Verify that the items you targeted in the document library only appear for persons in those audiences.

Note

You can also target content in My Sites to audiences by using several different Web Parts.
