You can uninstall a service if you do not want to retain a service or keep it on the server. You can uninstall a service when:

  • The service is no longer in use.

  • The service is moved to another server and you do not need it on the old server.

The service that is uninstalled stops running on the current server. The status changes to Stopped and the action changes to Start.

If you stop the Office SharePoint Server Search service, it deletes the index files permanently and you will not be able to recover them. The index files will not be available for all other Shared Services Providers (SSPs) as well.

Membership in the Farm Administrators group and the Administrators group on the local server computer is the minimum required to complete this procedure.
