  • Move Excel Calculation Services to a new server

  • Move the Office SharePoint Server Search service to a new server

  • Move the Windows SharePoint Services Help Search service to a new server

  • Move the Windows SharePoint Services Web Application service to a new server

If all of the services are running on a single server, the performance of the server slows down. You can move some of the services to another server to enhance the performance of the site. You must add a server to the server farm to move services according to your needs, such as a front-end Web server or an application server. Then, you can move services to dedicated servers.

You should have the following information ready before moving services to a new server:

  • A list of names of newly added servers to the farm on which you can move your services.

  • A plan that specifies how you want to add the server to the farm. For example, you can add a server to the farm as a front-end Web server or an application server.

When you move services to a new server, the service you select stops running on the current server and starts to run on the newly added server.

When you stop the Office SharePoint Server Search service in the process of moving it to another server, it deletes the index files permanently and makes them unrecoverable. The index files are also not available for all other Shared Services Providers (SSPs).

Membership in the Farm Administrators group and the Administrators group on the local server computer is the minimum required to complete this procedure.
