Web sites based on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 exist in a hierarchy. The top-level Web site is at the top of the hierarchy. Under the top-level site, there can be multiple subsites, and each subsite can contain other subsites. The entire structure of a top-level Web site and all of its subsites is called a site collection.

If you want to see the full list of subsites for a site collection, including nested subsites, you must be a member of the Site Collection Administrators group for the top-level Web site of the site collection. At this level, you can use the View Site Hierarchy page to see the full site hierarchy, which is a list of all subsites nested below the top-level Web site.

The View Site Hierarchy page lists the sites alphabetically by URL, so http://server1/sites/site1/subsiteA will appear before http://server1/sites/site1/subsiteB. From this page, you can click the site's URL to go to the homepage of the site, or click Manage to view the Site Administration page for the site.

Note

This view is available only to the administrators of the site collection and can be accessed only from the top-level Web site in the site collection.

Membership in the Site Administrators SharePoint group, or equivalent, is the minimum permission level required to complete this procedure. At this level, you can use the View Site Hierarchy page to see the full site hierarchy — a list of all subsites nested below the top-level Web site. If you need to view the contents of a site within the hierarchy, you will also need permissions to that site.

View site collection hierarchy

Use this procedure to view the site collection hierarchy. After you complete this procedure, members of the site collection administrators group can view a list of all subsites below the top-level Web site in that site collection from the View Site Hierarchy page.

View site collection hierarchy

    • Type the URL of the site in the Internet Explorer.

    • On the View Site Collection page, click the site collection you want to view.

  2. Click Site Settings.

  3. On the Site Settings page, in the Site Collection Administration section, click Site hierarchy. The following information is available for each site:

    • Site URL: Displays the site URL that was specified when the site was created. Click the URL to view the homepage of that site.

    • Title: Displays the title given when the site was created.

    • Manage: Click Manage to view the Site Settings page for a specific site. On the Site Settings page, you can add or edit users and permissions, look and feel, galleries, Site Administration, and Site Collection Administration.
