This section provides information about setting up the servers in your authoring environment for creating authored elements for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. Depending upon the size of your authoring staff and your content needs, your authoring environment might be a single server or an entire farm. This information is for a multiple-computer farm environment, using Windows Server 2003, Office SharePoint Server 2007, and Microsoft SQL Server 2005. For more information about authored elements, see Review of site elements.

The authoring environment is where authors and designers use authoring workstations to create and customize artifacts and authored content that are stored on an authoring farm. For more information about this environment, see Review of environments.

Note

You may need to troubleshoot your components and applications in the test environment, which might not have a source-level debugger like Visual Studio. To prepare for this, you should produce a program database (.pdb) file along with your coded elements, and enable logging, tracing, and other instrumentation options. For more information, see PDB Files (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=106290&clcid=0x409).

Hardware and software requirements

Because your authoring environment is not used for testing, the computer on which you run Office SharePoint Server 2007 and the other software does not need to be as robust as your production environment. For more information about system requirements, see Determine hardware and software requirements (Office SharePoint Server).

Installing Office SharePoint Server 2007 and other software

You will need to install a Office SharePoint Server 2007 farm with all of the components or features that you developed that must be used to author content of artifacts. Typically, the authoring farm consists of at least one workstation to create and customize artifacts and authored content and an Office SharePoint Server 2007 server where these elements are stored. For more information about creating a Office SharePoint Server 2007 farm, seeDeploy Office SharePoint Server 2007 in a server farm environment.

Note

After you have finished installing Office SharePoint Server 2007, you should install the latest software updates.
