Set up the server environments
Updated: July 15, 2008
Applies To: Office SharePoint Server 2007
Updated: 2008-07-15
The goal of this section is to provide guidance for preparing the server environments where coded elements used in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 sites—such as workflows, document converters, and Web Parts—are developed and distributed. This section provides the following:
-
Information about the system and hardware requirements for each environment
-
The steps for installing the software required for each environment
-
Additional guidance for configuring the environments
There are two types of elements in a site based on Office SharePoint Server 2007: developed elements and authored elements. For more information about site elements, see Review of site elements.
Note:

This section does not cover the actual deployment of coded components and authored content between the environments or to the live production environment. For an overview of the development and distribution process, see Design and build sites for Office SharePoint Server 2007. |
The development and distribution process involves the following environments:
-
Development
-
Configuration management
-
Test
-
Authoring
-
Pilot
-
Production
For more information about these environments, see Review of environments.
Depending upon the scale of your coded elements and content needs and the size and complexity of your development and testing team, you might combine one or more of the environments. For more information about factors that can guide your topology and approach, see Determine your approach and Customization scenarios.
