This article provides information and a procedure on how to upgrade from a trial version of Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 to a full product edition.

In this article:

If you are using a trial version of SharePoint Server 2010 and want to upgrade to a licensed product edition, you can purchase a license and perform the upgrade on the SharePoint Central Administration Web site. For more information about purchasing a license, see How to buy Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=196728).

The following upgrade options of a trial version of SharePoint Server 2010 to a licensed product edition are available:

  • Standard trial version to Standard licensed edition

  • Enterprise trial version to Enterprise licensed edition

  • Standard trial version to Enterprise trial version to Enterprise licensed edition

    CautionCaution
You cannot upgrade directly from a Standard trial version to an Enterprise licensed version. You must upgrade to the Enterprise trial version first. Follow the steps in this article to upgrade to the Enterprise trial version and then to the Enterprise licensed version, and then follow the steps in the following article to enable the Enterprise features: Upgrade from a SharePoint Server 2010 Standard CAL to an Enterprise CAL.

After you have purchased a license to upgrade to the licensed edition of SharePoint Server 2010, you can use the Convert License Type page on the Central Administration Web site to enter the new product key.

Use the following procedure to convert a license type and enter the product key.

To convert a license type and enter the product key
  1. Verify that you have the following administrative credentials:

    • To convert a license type, you must be a member of the Farm Administrators SharePoint group on the computer that is running Central Administration.

  2. On the Central Administration Web site, in the Upgrade and Migration section, click Convert farm license type.

  3. On the Convert License Type page, in the Enter the Product Key box, type the new product key and then click OK.

You can verify that you have the licensed product edition of SharePoint Server 2010 by going back to the Convert License Type page and making sure that the license type has changed.

noteNote
If you upgraded from a Standard client access license (CAL) to an Enterprise CAL, you must enable the enterprise features on existing sites in your server farm. For more information, see Upgrade from a SharePoint Server 2010 Standard CAL to an Enterprise CAL.
