During the indexing process, content items are accessed and read by the crawler. The process of extracting the information from these files results in a content index that resides in the file system of the index server and the Search database that resides in the database used by Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. User search queries are run against this content index and the Search database.

The articles in this section in describe the default settings that are used by the crawler and what you can do to aid the crawling process and produce better search results for users.

  • Add content sources (Office SharePoint Server 2007). Content sources define what content to crawl, how to access the content, and how to behave when crawling that content. You can specify settings that define when content is crawled and crawl behavior, such as how deep to crawl in a Web site or how many server hops are allowed.

  • IFilters and protocol handlers (Office SharePoint Server 2007). Office SharePoint Server 2007 installs with the ability to read and index a specific set of file types. This initial list of file types can be increased by installing and registering additional IFilters.
