Using Central Administration (Office SharePoint Server)

You can use Central Administration to perform administration tasks for SharePoint Products and Technologies from a central location. Central Administration is divided into four parts: the Home page, the Operations page, the Application Management page, and the administration pages for Shared Services Providers (SSPs).

Learn what's on the Home page

The Central Administration Home page is opened by clicking the Home tab. The Home page contains the following three Web parts:

  • Administrator Tasks   This section lists tasks that you should complete. Each task links to a page where you can read about and then perform the task.

  • Farm Topology   This section lists each server in the farm and the services running on each server. You can click a server to manage its services.

  • Resources   This section is a list of links similar to the Favorites menu in Windows Internet Explorer. When you add a new link, you can optionally add a description and notes.

Learn what's on the Operations page

The Operations page is opened by clicking the Operations tab. This page contains links to pages where you can perform administrative tasks. The following table describes the sections on the Operations page.

Contains links to pages where you can administer services, farm topology, and e-mail settings.

Contains links to pages where you can administer security settings, including antivirus, blocked file types for downloading and uploading, and single sign-on.

Logging and Reporting

Contains links to pages that help you understand the state of your servers.

Contains links to pages where you can complete such tasks as upgrading sites and servers, enabling features, and migrating content.

Global Configuration

The Application Management page contains links where you can create and administer Web Applications and Site Collections, and contains links to pages where you can configure related settings.

Learn what's on the Shared Services Provider pages

On the left navigation bar, under Shared Services Administration, you can click a Shared Services Provider (SSP) to access its administration home page.

The following table describes the sections on an SSP administration home page.

Contains links to pages where you can administer user information, My Sites settings, published links, and personalization services permissions.

Search

Contains links to pages where you can administer search settings.

Portal Usage Reporting

Contains links to pages where you can administer portal usage reporting for sites.

Contains links to pages where you can administer audience settings.

Excel Services Settings

Contains links to pages where you can administer Excel Services settings.
