Create a My Site host location

Office 2007

Updated: July 12, 2007

Applies To: Office SharePoint Server 2007

Updated: 2007-07-12

Before you perform this procedure, confirm that:

  • You have read the topic Manage My Site host locations.

  • Your system is running either the Standard or Enterprise version of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

    ImportantImportant:

You must be a member of the Farm Administrators group to perform this procedure.

Farm administrators can create a new My Site host location. A My Site host location is created by default in the Web application for the portal site, so this procedure is only necessary if you are migrating My Sites for reasons such as performance, storage capacity, or security.

To create a new My Site host location, you perform the following steps:

  1. Create a Web application for the My Site host location. In most cases, you can accept the default settings for a new Web application.

  2. Create a site collection within the Web application for the My Site host location, selecting the My Site Host site template and the Personal Site quota template.

  3. Browse to the site collection and click the option to Set the site collection as the My Site host location.

After a new host location is created, personal sites created in a previous host location remain in the previous host location, and cannot be accessed unless a link to that location is added to the trusted My Site host locations list. For more information on trusted My Site host locations links, see Add trusted My Site host locations link.
