Before you perform the following procedures, we recommend that:

Important

You must be a search services administrator to perform the following procedure. For more information, see Add or remove a search services administrator (Search Server 2008).

Pause a crawl of a particular content source

Use the following procedure to pause a crawl of a particular content source.

Important

We recommend not pausing crawls for too many content sources at the same time, because each content source that is paused consumes memory on the index server.

Pause a crawl of a particular content source

  1. On the Search Administration page, in the Search section, click Search settings.

  2. On the Configure Search Settings page, in the Crawl Settings section, click Content sources and crawl schedules.

  3. On the Manage Content Sources page, click the content source that you want to pause, and then select Pause Crawl in the dropdown list.

The value in the Status column changes to Pausing for the content source you selected.

  4. Note that the value in the Status column on the page does not change when the crawl is paused. To update the Status column, refresh the Manage Content Sources page by clicking Refresh on the toolbar. When the crawl is paused, the value in the Status column changes to Paused.

    Note

Depending on the content being crawled, this might take several minutes to complete.

Resume a crawl of a particular content source

Use the following procedure to resume a crawl of a particular content source.

Resume a crawl of a particular content source

  1. On the Search Services Administration page, in the Search section, click Search settings.

  2. On the Configure Search Settings page, in the Crawl Settings section, click Content sources and crawl schedules.

  3. On the Manage Content Sources page, click the content source that you want to resume, and select Resume Crawl in the dropdown list.

    Note

The value in the Status column for the content source changes to Crawling Full or Crawling Incremental depending on the type of crawl that was running at the time it was paused.
