Search Server 2008

Updated: June 12, 2008

Applies To: Microsoft Search Server 2008

Topic Last Modified: 2008-06-04

NoteNote:
Unless otherwise noted, the information in this article applies to both Microsoft Search Server 2008 and Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express.

You can add enhanced enterprise search capability to an existing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 deployment by upgrading to Microsoft Search Server 2008 or Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express. To upgrade, you install Search Server over Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on each server in your Windows SharePoint Services deployment, and then configure Search Server as necessary for your organization. Installing Search Server always upgrades an existing installation of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. This article provides instructions and considerations regarding this upgrade process.

ImportantImportant:
Before you upgrade to Search Server, we recommend that you carefully plan your Search Server installation and configuration. For example, it is important to plan your Search Server topology, as Search Server topology options differ from those in Windows SharePoint Services. For more information, see Plan to deploy Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express.

In this article:

This article applies to upgrading to Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express from either of the following products:

  • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

  • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with Service Pack 1 (SP1). If Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 is not installed, you are prompted and required to install it on each Windows SharePoint Services server when Search Server installation begins. Search Server installation cannot proceed until Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with SP1 is installed on each server.

    NoteNote:
If you are using Windows SharePoint Services 2.0, you must upgrade to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 before you can upgrade to Search Server. For information about downloading Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 for installation, see Download Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

You can upgrade either of the following types of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 deployments to Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express:

  • Basic installation   If Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 was installed with the Basic installation option, you can upgrade to Search Server only as a single-server, stand-alone deployment. When you upgrade a Basic installation, your Windows SharePoint Services databases remain in Windows Internal Database, and Search Server automatically installs and uses Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for creating new databases.

    NoteNote:
When you create a SharePoint Web application after the upgrade, you can configure that application to use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition or Windows Internal Database. SQL Server 2005 Express Edition limits maximum database size to 4 gigabytes. Windows Internal Database is not subject to that database size restriction.
  • Advanced installation   If Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 was installed with the Advanced installation option, you can upgrade to Search Server only with the Advanced installation option. When you upgrade an Advanced installation, your SQL Server databases are carried over to Search Server 2008 from Windows SharePoint Services.

Before you upgrade to Search Server, do the following:

  • Upgrade to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 if you are using Windows SharePoint Services 2.0. You cannot upgrade to Search Server 2008 directly from Windows SharePoint Services 2.0. For information about downloading Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 for installation, see Download Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. To download the product with SP1, see Download Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with Service Pack 1.

  • Recommended: Install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 if it is not on the computer. We recommend installing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 before you begin the Search Server upgrade. Otherwise, you are prompted and required to install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 when you begin the upgrade. The upgrade to Search Server proceeds more quickly if Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 is already installed. To download this service pack for installation, see Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1.

    ImportantImportant:
When you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1, you must run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard before you install Search Server. For more information and related considerations, see the instructions in Deploy software updates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.
  • If language packs are installed for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, install the corresponding language packs for Search Server. For more information, see Deploy language packs (Search Server 2008).

  • Plan to use the enterprise search capability that Search Server provides. For more information, see Introducing Microsoft Search Server 2008 and Introducing Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express.

  • Consider the implications in case you want to reverse an upgrade and return to using Windows SharePoint Services. For more information, see About reversing an upgrade later in this article.

  • Back up your entire Windows SharePoint Services environment, including your custom templates, features, and solutions.

  • Inform your Windows SharePoint Services users of forthcoming changes to their sites and of anticipated site unavailability during the upgrade process.

Use this procedure to begin the upgrade to Search Server.

To start the upgrade to Search Server
  1. Start the installation by doing one of the following:

    • Download and install Search Server 2008 Express:

      a. Download Search Server 2008 Express from the Microsoft Enterprise Search Web site. Click the download option that corresponds to the x86 or x64 operating system architecture (32-bit–based or 64-bit–based) on which you plan to install Search Server Express.

      b. Navigate to and run the downloaded file, SearchServerExpress.exe, which is a self-extracting archive file. The file automatically uncompresses and the Search Server Express installation Start screen appears.

    • To install Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express from a product disc, insert the disc in the CD-ROM drive. The product installation Start screen appears.

      NoteNote:
If the installation Start screen does not appear automatically after a short time, navigate to the root folder of the disc, and then double-click the file Splash.hta.
    • To install Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express from a local disk or file share, navigate to the product location and then double-click the file Splash.hta. The product installation Start screen appears.

  2. On the Search Server installation Start screen, under Install, click Install Search Server.

  3. The following message appears if Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 is not installed:

"Setup is unable to proceed due to the following error(s): http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=103318. Correct the issue(s) listed above and re-run setup."

If this message appears, do the following:

    1. Click OK.

    2. Download the version of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 that matches your computer architecture (x86 or x64).

    3. Install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 on each server in the existing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 deployment.

      ImportantImportant:
As previously mentioned, when you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1, you must run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard before you continue with Search Server installation. For more information and related considerations, see the instructions in Deploy software updates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.
  4. For Search Server 2008 only:

    1. On the Enter your Product Key screen, enter your Product Key. After the installation program validates the Product Key, it places a green check mark next to the Product Key box.

    2. Click Continue after the installation program verifies your Product Key.

  5. On the Read the Microsoft Software License Terms screen, review the terms, select the I accept the terms of this agreement check box, and then click Continue.

  6. Continue the installation by using one of the following procedures to install Search Server over Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1:

Use this procedure to upgrade to a Search Server Basic installation from a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 Basic installation.

To upgrade a Basic installation of Windows SharePoint Services SP1
  1. On the Server Type screen, Stand-alone is the only available server type.

    • Optional: In the File Location tab, change the installation path or the location for content index files.

    • Optional: In the Feedback tab, specify whether you want to participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program.

  2. On the Server Type screen, click Install Now. The Installation Progress screen appears. This phase of the installation takes several minutes to complete.

  3. On the next screen, which prompts you to complete the configuration:

    1. Ensure that the Run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard now check box is selected.

    2. Click Close to start the Configuration Wizard.

  4. On the Welcome to SharePoint Products and Technologies screen, click Next.

  5. In the dialog box that notifies you that some services might be restarted or reset during configuration, click Yes.

  6. By default, the Search Server 2008 upgrade wizard creates the default Search Center site on port 80. If there is an existing SharePoint site on that port, the Overwrite Default SharePoint Site screen appears. On this screen, click one of the following options:

    • Yes, overwrite the existing site with a new default SharePoint site.

    • No, do not overwrite the existing site. Create a new SharePoint site.

    • No, do not create a default site.

If you select the latter option, no Search Center site is created. However, you can create and configure your own Search Center site and other sites when the upgrade process is complete.

  7. The Configuring SharePoint Products and Technologies Wizard screen appears. The Configuration Wizard runs for several minutes to automate configuration tasks such as installing Search Server services, installing and configuring SQL Server databases, and creating the Search Server Web site for Search Administration.

  8. On the Configuration Successful page, click Finish. Your Basic installation is now complete. A Web browser opens the Welcome to Microsoft Search Server 2008 page, which provides guidance for configuring your Search Server installation.

    NoteNote:
If you are prompted for a name and password, type the credentials for an account that has access to the Central Administration Web site. Add the site to the list of trusted sites in Windows Internet Explorer when you are prompted.
NoteNote:
This completes the process of installing Search Server over a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 Basic installation. You must now finish the upgrade by following the procedures in Configure Search Server later in this article.

Use this procedure to upgrade to a Search Server Advanced installation from a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 Advanced installation.

To upgrade an Advanced installation of Windows SharePoint Services SP1
  1. On the Server Type screen, click one of the following:

    • Complete   Installs the application server role and the Web front-end (WFE) server role. We recommend choosing this option under either of the following conditions:

      - This is the first server in your Search Server deployment.

      - You want to configure this computer as an application server for the Search Server 2008 farm that you are creating with this upgrade.

    • Web Front End   Installs only the WFE server role.

  2. On the Server Type screen:

    • Optional: In the File Location tab, change the installation path or the location for content index files.

    • Optional: In the Feedback tab, specify whether you want to participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program.

  3. On the Server Type screen, click Install Now. The Installation Progress screen appears. This phase of the installation takes several minutes to complete.

  4. On the next screen, which prompts you to complete the configuration:

    1. Ensure that the Run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard now check box is selected.

    2. Click Close to start the Configuration Wizard.

  5. On the Welcome to SharePoint Products and Technologies screen, click Next.

  6. In the dialog box that notifies you that some services might be restarted or reset during configuration, click Yes.

  7. On the Completing the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard screen, click Next.

  8. On the Configuration Successful screen, click Finish.

  9. If this is the first server in your Windows SharePoint Services farm that you are upgrading to Search Server, a Web browser opens the Search Server Configuration page. You complete this page only once for any Search Server farm. For instructions on completing this procedure, see "Complete the Search Server Configuration page" in Install Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express.

  10. Repeat steps 1 through 8 in this procedure for each server in your Windows SharePoint Services farm.

After you install Search Server over Windows SharePoint Services, you must complete the upgrade by performing each of the following procedures:

After you install Search Server over Windows SharePoint Services, you must activate features for the Windows SharePoint Services Web applications that were carried over to Search Server. Use the following procedure to activate features for these Web applications.

To activate features for Web applications carried over to Search Server
  1. From the Central Administration Web site, click Application Management.

  2. On the Application Management page, under SharePoint Web Application Management, click Manage Web application features.

  3. On the Manage Web Application Features page, click a Web application.

  4. Next to the description for Office Server Enterprise Search, click Activate.

  5. Next to the description for Office Server Site Search, click Activate.

  6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for each Web application listed on the Manage Web Application Features page.

After you activate features for the Web applications carried over to Search Server, configure each Windows SharePoint Services site collection to use the new Search Center user interface. Use the following procedure to configure these Windows SharePoint Services site collections.

To configure site collections to use the Search Center
  1. From the Central Administration Web site, on the Site Actions menu, click Site Settings.

  2. In the Site Collection Administration section, click Search Settings.

  3. On the Search Setting page, click Use Custom Scopes.

  4. Type the address of your Search Center in the text box, for example, http://servername:port.

  5. Navigate to a page in your original Windows SharePoint Services site.

  6. Verify that the Scopes list now includes All Sites.

You can add more scopes by clicking Search Scopes on the Search Settings page in the Site Collection Administration section of the Central Administration Web site.

  7. Type a query and verify that you see the results in the Search Center’s results.aspx page.

After you install Search Server over Windows SharePoint Services, use the following procedure to verify that all start addresses for crawls in your Windows SharePoint Services deployment were carried over to your Search Server installation.

To verify start addresses for crawls
  1. From the Central Administration Web site, click Shared Services.

  2. On the Search Administration page, in the Crawling section, click Content sources.

  3. On the Manage Content Sources page, point to Local Office SharePoint Server sites, click the down arrow, and click Edit.

  4. On the Edit Content Source page, under Start Addresses, verify that all SharePoint sites from your Windows SharePoint Services deployment are listed. There should be one start address corresponding to each Web application that was in your Windows SharePoint Services deployment.

  5. Verify that search continues to work on all SharePoint sites that were carried over from your Windows SharePoint Services deployment.

If you upgraded a multiple-server Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 farm to a Search Server 2008 farm that has multiple application servers, you must configure the Search Server 2008 application servers as follows:

  • On one and only one application server, enable the index server role and disable the query server role.

  • On each other application server, enable the query server role and ensure that the index server role is disabled.

For instructions on how to perform these steps, see "Task 2: Configure application server roles" in Add query servers to expand a farm (Search Server 2008). For information about topology options for Search Server 2008 deployments, see "Topology options" in Plan to deploy Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express.

You cannot reverse an upgrade to a Basic configuration of Search Server from a Basic configuration of Windows SharePoint Services. After you upgrade a Basic configuration, you cannot uninstall Search Server and return to a working installation of Windows SharePoint Services.

In contrast, you can reverse an upgrade to an Advanced configuration of Search Server from an Advanced configuration of Windows SharePoint Services. However, reversing this type of upgrade might require configuring SQL Server accordingly. When you configure SQL Server so that you can return to working with Windows SharePoint Services, do the following:

  • To keep the configuration database, stop the Search Server services before completing the uninstall process.

  • To roll back the content databases and rebuild your former farm configuration, uninstall Search Server and then run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard to rejoin the Windows SharePoint Services server farm.

ImportantImportant:
Before you reverse an upgrade on a production server, we recommend that you back up your environment and then reverse an upgrade on a test server.
