Unsupported upgrade paths to Search Server 2008

The following table contains information about upgrade paths to Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express that are not supported.

Upgrading from this product Is not supported for this reason

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Search

Prior to installing Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express, any existing deployment of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Search must be uninstalled.

Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express Release Candidate

Prior to installing the final release version of Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express, any pre-release version of Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express must first be uninstalled.

Windows SharePoint Services 2.0

Before upgrading to Search Server 2008, you must first upgrade Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. For more information, see Upgrade to Search Server 2008 from Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

Coming soon

Search Server 2008 introduces many features that are new in the Microsoft Enterprise Search lineup. We have listened to customers who asked for these features to be included in Office SharePoint Server 2007. Microsoft will release a public update that customers of Office SharePoint Server 2007 can install to add the new Search Server 2008 features, including federated search and the Search Administration page.

When this public update is available it will enable the following upgrade paths.

  • Upgrade from Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express to Office SharePoint Server 2007

  • Apply the patch to Office SharePoint Server 2007 to enable the new search features

    NoteNote

A single server can have an installation of Search Server 2008 or Office SharePoint Server 2007, but not both. Attempting to install Search Server 2008 on top of Office SharePoint Server 2007 will not upgrade Office SharePoint Server 2007.

    NoteNote

You cannot mix and match servers running Search Server 2008 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 in the same farm configuration. All servers in a farm must run the same product and version.

Note on installation types and databases

When upgrading to or from Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express, the installation type of the upgrade must be the same as the original installation. The possible installation types are:

  • Basic   A basic installation of Search Server or Office SharePoint Server 2007 uses the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition database.

    NoteNote

A basic installation of Windows SharePoint Services uses the Windows Internal Database. Installing Search Server or Office SharePoint Server 2007 over Windows SharePoint Services will use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for all Search Server and Office SharePoint Server 2007 databases. Existing Windows SharePoint Services databases will continue to use the Windows Internal Database. New SharePoint sites created after the upgrade can use either database instance.

  • Advanced   An advanced installation of Search Server, Windows SharePoint Services, or Office SharePoint Server 2007 uses a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database.

In other words, Basic installations remain basic, and Advanced installations remain advanced. You cannot switch installation types during upgrade.
