Selecting which mailboxes and public folders to scan with the scheduled scan

Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server (FPE) offers flexibility in selecting which mailboxes and public folders to scan with the scheduled scan. You can include all mailboxes and public folders, or you can select specific mailboxes and public folders.

When scanning selected mailboxes, the scheduled scan actually goes through the entire store even if only one mailbox is selected (FPE only acts upon the selected mailbox, however). For a more efficient scan of specific mailboxes, you may want to consider using the on-demand scan instead. For more information about using the on-demand scan, see Scanning specific mailboxes for malware on-demand.
noteNote:
  • Scans targeting large public folders or many public folders may run for a long time. For a large public folder, it is recommended that you scan associated subfolders on a rotating basis until you have scanned all the subfolders in the large folder.
  • This selection affects not only scheduled antimalware scanning, but also any filtering options that are associated with the scheduled scan.
To select which mailboxes and public folders to scan with the scheduled scanner
  1. In the Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server Administrator Console, click Policy Management, and under Global Settings, click Scan Options.

  2. In the Global Settings - Scan Options pane, under the Scan Targets - Scheduled section, you can select one of the following options for mailboxes and public folders:

    • All—Scans all mailboxes or public folders. This is the default value.
    • None—Does not scan any mailboxes or public folders.
    • Selected—Scans specific mailboxes or public folders. When you choose Selected, the Select Mailboxes button or Select Public Folders button becomes active.
      noteNote:
      Mailboxes and public folders with names that are made up entirely of backslashes (\) are not scanned if FPE is configured for Selected scanning. If FPE is set to scan all mailboxes or public folders, those that use backslashes or other special characters are scanned.
      • If you click the Select Mailboxes button, the Select Mailboxes dialog box opens, enabling you to enter part of a user name or alias. Clicking the search icon (represented by a magnifying glass) opens another dialog box in which you can select all or some of the mailboxes that met your search criteria. Click OK to return to the Select Mailboxes dialog box, where your selections are now listed. To remove a selection, click Remove. To return to the Global Settings - Scan Options pane, click Apply and Close.
      • If you click the Select Public Folders button, the Select Public Folders dialog box opens, enabling you to select entire public folder databases or specific public folders in that database. When you are done making your selections, click Apply and Close.
  3. Click Save.
