Build and Deploy the First Domain Controller

Before you add the other infrastructure components, you must build and deploy the first domain controller, AD01.

Tasks

  1. Install Prerequisites for the First Domain Controller

  2. Modify Windows Firewall Settings for the First Domain Controller

  3. Deploy the First Domain Controller

Prerequisites

  • Windows Server 2008 media

Install Prerequisites for the First Domain Controller

Procedure W08-DWCM.1: To install prerequisites for the first domain controller

  1. Install Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition on AD01.

  2. Enable Remote Desktop.

Modify Windows Firewall Settings for the First Domain Controller

Procedure W08-DWCM.2: To modify Windows firewall settings for the first domain controller

  1. Log on to AD01 as local Administrator and open the Server Manager console.

  2. Configure properties for Windows firewall with advanced security by setting the firewall state to Off.

Deploy the First Domain Controller

Procedure W08-DWCM.3: To deploy the first domain controller

  1. Log on to AD01 with the local Administrator account.

  2. Open a command prompt and run DCPROMO.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a domain in a new forest. Set the following information:

    • FQDN of the new forest root domain: fabrikam.com

    • Forest Functional Level: Windows Server 2003

    • Domain Functional Level: Windows Server 2003

    • Additional Domain Controller Options: Select DNS Server and Global Catalog

    Note

You may receive a warning message stating 'This computer has dynamically assigned IP address(es)'. You must ensure that the server has a statically assigned IPv4 address. However, you may still receive this message, due to the fact that IPv6 is enabled and set to DHCP by default. As long as you have a statically assigned IPv4 address, it is safe to ignore the message and continue.

You may receive a delegation warning. It is safe to ignore the message and continue.

  4. When DCPromo completes, restart AD01.
