In the following case scenarios, you will apply what you’ve learned about preparing for the installation of Exchange Server 2007. You can find answers to these questions in the “Answers” section at the end of this book.

Case Scenario 1: Preparing the Active Directory Environment and Network Infrastructure at Tailspintoys for Exchange Deployment

You are planning to deploy Exchange Server 2007 at Tailspintoys. Tailspintoys has an existing Exchange Server 2003 deployment. As part of planning for the Exchange Server 2007 deployment, you must find the answer to several questions:

  1. Under what conditions will it be necessary to disable link state on the Exchange Server 2003 servers?
  2. To what group or groups must the user who runs Setup /PrepareLegacyEx-changePermissions be a member if it is to be run for all domains in the forest?
  3. At what location must Setup /PrepareSchema be run?

Case Scenario 2: Preparing a Windows Server 2003 Computer for Exchange Server Installation

A server that was going to be used for a now-canceled project has been forwarded to you in the hope that you can provision it to run Exchange Server 2007. You have access to the Windows Server 2003 R2 installation media in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions. The server itself has no operating system currently installed but has the following specifications:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
  • 4 GB of RAM
  • Three, 1-terabyte SATA HDDs
  1. Should you replace the processor with an AMD Opteron that has the same clock speed?
  2. If assigned the Mailbox server role, approximately how many mailboxes could this server support?
  3. What disk drive configuration could you use to ensure that no Exchange data is lost in the event that a hard disk drive fails?
