Real World

JC Mackin

Though this won’t be covered on any IT certification exam, there is a “trick” you should know for the real world that lets you enable Remote Desktop remotely. Of course, you’re supposed to enable Remote Desktop locally on any box that you later want to reach through a Remote Desktop Connection, but there are bound to be cases when you will need to RDP in to a computer that doesn’t yet have the feature enabled. When you’re in this kind of a situation, use Regedit on the local computer and the Connect Network Registry command to connect to the Registry of the remote computer. (Of course, you will need to be an administrator on the remote machine.) Then browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server on the remote Registry, and set the fDenyTSConnections key to 0.

Do yourself a favor and memorize this trick. If you work as a technical support specialist, it’s certain to be useful.
