Installing SharePoint Administration Toolkit (Windows SharePoint Services)

Updated: 2008-08-28

System Requirements

The SharePoint Administration Toolkit requires Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to be installed. You must be a local administrator to install the SharePoint Administrator Toolkit and must a member of the Farm Administrators group within the SharePoint server farm to use the SharePoint Administration Toolkit.

NoteNote:

The User Profile Replication Engine is not supported for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

Important:

You can create a task to run any available server. However, unless the SharePoint Administration Toolkit is installed on the server upon which the operation is selected to run, the newly created timer job will fail and the log file at %COMMOMPROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\Logs will contain the following two messages:

  • SharePoint cannot deserialize an object of type Microsoft.Office.Server.ESCM.ESCMStatsCollectionJob, Microsoft.Office.Server.ESCM, Version=12.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=<random token number> on this machine. This typically occurs because the assembly containing this type is not installed on this machine. In this case, this message can be safely ignored. Otherwise, the assembly needs to be installed on this machine in a location that can be discovered by the .NET Framework.

  • SharePoint cannot deserialize an object of type Microsoft.Office.Server.ESCM.ESCMPersistedObject, Microsoft.Office.Server.ESCM, Version=12.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=<random token number> on this machine. This typically occurs because the assembly containing this type is not installed on this machine. In this case, this message can be safely ignored. Otherwise, the assembly needs to be installed on this machine in a location that can be discovered by the .NET Framework.

To install the SharePoint Administration Toolkit

  1. Important:

On a Windows Server 2008-based computer, if User Access Control (UAC) is enabled, you must perform the following steps:

    1. To run the User Profile Replication Engine tool, you must elevate the permission of the application to Run as Administrator. For additional information about User Access Control, see User Account Control Step-by-Step Guide

    2. To install the Batch Site Manager tool, you must manually type the following typing the following two commands (without quotations):

    “psconfig –cmd applicationcontent –install”

    stsadm –o installfeature –name BatchSiteManagerLinks”

From either the SharePoint Administration Toolkit x86 page (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=119535&clcid=0x409) or the SharePoint Administration Toolkit x64 page (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=119536&clcid=0x409), download the MicrosoftSharepointAdministrationToolkit.exe file by clicking the Download button, and then save the file to your hard disk.

  2. Double-click the MicrosoftSharepointAdministrationToolkit.exe program file on your hard disk to start the Setup program.

  3. After the License Terms for Microsoft Software is accepted, click Next.

  4. Select which tool or tools are to be installed by choosing the appropriate icon and select the top-level feature (“This feature will be installed on local hard drive”).

  5. If the Batch Site Manager is being installed, the following message is displayed: “The following services may have to be started or reset during Batch Site Manager installation: Internet Information Services, SharePoint Administration Service, and SharePoint Timer Service.” Choose Yes to restart the services if required and continue with Setup or No to exit Setup.

  6. If the User Profile Replication Engine tool is being installed, the default folder location is \Program Files\Microsoft\Replication Engine. Click Browse to change the location of this folder. After a location is selected, click OK, and then click Next.

  7. If Batch Site Manager is being installed, a VBScript is called and runs PSConfig and Stsadm commands before Setup is finished. If the commands do not execute properly, the following error message is displayed: “Failed to register Batch Site Manager”.

    NoteNote:

Any failed error that occurs during installation will cause Setup to exit. If you do receive an error message, you can manually install the Batch Site Manager tool by manually typing the following two commands (without quotations):

    1. “psconfig –cmd applicationcontent –install”

    2. “stsadm –o installfeature –name BatchSiteManagerLinks”

  8. To complete installation, click Finish.
