Move the Exchange Server Data

Updated: February 17, 2009

Applies To: Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard

The Exchange Server data provides a single repository where you can manage multiple types of unstructured information. The Exchange Server data includes the mailbox store and the public folders store. You can use the Move Exchange Server Data Wizard to move the Exchange Server data to a new location.

Important

You cannot move the Exchange Server data if a critical system operation is being performed (such as Backup, Recovery, or System Update).

To move the Exchange Server data

  1. Open the Windows SBS Console.

  2. Click the Backup and Server Storage tab on the navigation bar, and then click the Server Storage tab.

  3. In the Tasks pane, click Move Exchange Server Data.

  4. Review the introductory text, and then click Next.

  5. The wizard checks your server for available hard disk drives and partitions where you can move the Exchange Server data to.

  6. If you have not configured Backup, you receive a message asking if you want to configure Backup and back up the data before moving it. Do one of the following:

    1. If you do not want to configure Backup or back up the data, click OK.

    2. If you want to configure Backup and back up the data before continuing, click Cancel. To configure Backup, click the Backup tab, and then in the Tasks pane click Configure server backup. When you finish configuring Backup and backing up the data, restart the wizard.

  7. On the Choose a new location for the data page, click the drive or partition where you want to move the data to, and then click Move.

  8. When the move finishes, click Close.

Note

The wizard cannot move the Exchange Server data if the Exchange Server data configuration has been changed to include more storage groups and to distribute the storage groups across different drives and volumes.
