Configure External Name Resolution for Windows SharePoint Services Provisioning

In order to perform Windows SharePoint Services site management tasks using MPS, the server that has the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Central Administration site, COLLAB01, must be able to resolve the external names of your SharePoint sites. There are a number of ways to enable this kind of name resolution on this server, including configuring your internal DNS servers to forward requests to external resolving servers or configuring seperate Network Interface Cards for external name resolution. For the purposes of this walkthrough, though, you will add the IP address of the External DNS server DNS01 as an additional DNS server on the existing network connection.

Procedure DWSH.32: To configure external name resolution for Windows SharePoint Services provisioning

  1. On COLLAB01, in Control Panel, double-click Network Connections.
  2. Right-click the connection under LAN or High-Speed Internet. If you have more than one connection, select the one through which you can contact the external DNS server DNS01 .
  3. Select Properties.
  4. On the General tab, select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
  5. Click the Advanced button.
  6. Select the DNS tab, click Add, and then enter the IP Address of your external DNS server DNS01.
