Port Openings

Front-end servers running Microsoft Exchange Server and clients connect over the Internet through a firewall. The following table lists the ports that must be opened for clients to connect to front-end Exchange servers through a firewall.

Port Protocol Purpose
443 HTTPS To enable Microsoft Outlook clients to connect to front-end Exchange servers using RPC over HTTP; also for Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA), Outlook Mobile Access (OMA), and ActiveSync clients to connect using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
80 HTTP To enable Outlook clients to connect to front-end Exchange servers using RPC over HTTP; also for OWA, OMA, and ActiveSync clients to connect using HTTP.
110 POP3 To enable front-end Exchange server connections for clients using Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3).
143 IMAP4 To enable front-end Exchange server connections for clients using Internet Message Access Protocol version 4 rev 1 (IMAP4).
25 SMTP To enable front-end Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) servers to route messages.
