Monitoring Feature Overview

This section provides additional detail about core Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) features used in the Microsoft Hosted Messaging and Collaboration infrastructure.

MOM Core Features

As used in the Hosted Messaging and Collaboration recommended design, MOM monitors services, sends alerts, and when appropriate attempts to automatically resolve errors or service outages. You and your operation staff gain easy access to up-to-date information about keeping your system functioning at optimum levels. The MOM Knowledge Base is updated every time you apply a management pack or your staff adds to it while customizing rules for your environment.

Hosted Messaging and Collaboration Management Pack Features provides additional information about the Hosted Messaging and Collaboration management pack, which includes some custom processing rule groups in addition to selected rules from standard server and application management packs. The selected rules facilitate the collection of event and performance data for each type of server being managed by MOM. When you configure MOM for your environment, you can select performance threshold limits tied to the collection of performance data. These limits may be set to trigger alerts to be sent to your operations staff. Choosing how you want alerts to be sent to your operations center staff is another standard MOM configuration task.

Hosted Messaging and Collaboration Management Packs Features

A bundle of selected rules that monitor critical services in the Hosted Messaging and Collaboration platform. This set of management packs is designed to help you deploy MOM with rules for monitoring core platform servers in one to two business days. The processing rule groups imported with these management packs allow you to monitor:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Base Operating System
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2007
  • Active Directory directory service events, alerts, and performance
  • Microsoft SQL Server events, alerts, and performance
  • Microsoft Provisioning System (MPS) events, alerts, and performance
  • DNS events, alerts, and performance
  • Microsoft Windows Network Load Balancing

Hosted Messaging and Collaboration provides a secondary SQL Server database, named PWDB40, for long term storage of performance data, which is initially captured in the MOM OnePoint database. This important feature of Hosted Messaging and Collaboration gives you the ability to export data for use in other applications. The solution also includes a sample ASP.NET Web charting application. This application provides a user interface and ASP.NET code base for creating reports based on data stored in PWDB40. Used in conjunction with the Microsoft Provisioning System, PWDB40, and PwdbChart to prepare you to rapidly customize this platform to support your customers.
