How do I enable the computer to update the DNS suffix when it changes its domain membership?

To enable the primary DNS suffix for a client computer that is running Windows Vista

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Click Classic View, and then double-click System.

  3. In the Computer name, domain and workgroup settings section, click Change settings.

  4. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  5. In System Properties, click Computer Name, and then click Change.

  6. In Computer Name/Domain Changes, click More.

  7. In DNS suffix and NetBIOS Computer Name, ensure that the Change primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes check box is selected.

To enable the primary DNS suffix for a client computer that is running Windows XP

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Click Classic View, and then double-click System.

  3. In System Properties, click Computer Name, and then click Change.

  4. In Computer Name Changes, click More.

  5. In DNS suffix and NetBIOS Computer Name, ensure that the Change primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes check box is selected.
