The Infrastructure Planning and Design Guide for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 includes the following eleven-step process:

Step 1: Define the Scope of the System Center Operations Manager 2007 Project. This step identifies the functional requirements of the business and the budgetary resources available to meet them.

Step 2: Identify Necessary Management Packs and Product Connectors. This step focuses on selecting required native management packs, determining how third-party applications will be monitored, and selecting appropriate product connectors.

Step 3: Determine How Monitoring Will Be Implemented. This step focuses on determining a plan for synthetic transaction monitoring and a sampling strategy for client monitoring.

Step 4: Determine the Number of Management Groups. The goal of this step is to determine the smallest number of management groups necessary to meet the organization’s monitoring objectives.

Step 5: Determine the Agent Security Model. This step involves determining the readiness of the organization to support mutual authentication between Operations Manager 2007 server and agent roles.

Step 6: Design and Place the System Center Operations Manager 2007 Server Roles. The goal of this step is to determine the appropriate sizing and distribution of Operations Manager 2007 server roles within each management group.

Step 7: Design the OperationsManager Database, ACS Database, and AEM File Share. The goal of this step is to create infrastructure designs for the OperationsManager database, ACS database, and the AEM file share.

Step 8: Design the Notification System. The goal of this step is to design the infrastructure to provide timely notification of alerts that require attention by Operations staff members, even when they are not logged on to the Operations console.

Step 9: Determine Whether to Implement Reporting. The goal of this step is to review data collected in Step 1 to determine whether reporting is necessary and thus to determine whether the Operations Manager 2007 Reporting Server role and associated data warehouse are necessary to the organization.

Step 10: Design the Data Warehouse, Reporting Server, and Service Level Dashboard. This step involves using data collected in Step 1 to estimate growth and size of the reporting data warehouse.

Step 11: Design the Network Connections. The goals of this step are to ensure that network connectivity between server roles and between server roles and agents is sufficient in terms of network bandwidth, and that the required firewall rules are in place to allow traffic to flow as necessary.
