Installing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on a Server Running Windows Small Business Server 2003

Updated: May 27, 2009

Applies To: Windows SBS 2003

The Windows® Small Business Server 2003 server software (Windows SBS) deeply integrates key Microsoft business productivity server products, including Windows SharePoint® Services 2.0. A new version of the Windows SharePoint technology, Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, is now available, and it provides enhanced features for your Windows SBS network. However, some of the differences between Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 break the integration between Windows SBS and Windows SharePoint Services. For this reason, if you want to install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on a Windows SBS network, you must install it side-by-side with Windows SharePoint Services 2.0. This leaves your existing https://companyweb Web site intact, and it also creates a new Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Web site.

This document shows you how to install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 side-by-side with Windows SharePoint Services 2.0, so you can use the exciting new features in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 without breaking the integration between Windows SBS and Windows SharePoint Services 2.0.

Warning

When you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on your server, do not choose Gradual upgrade or In-place upgrade. If you do, several Windows SBS administration tools will fail, and you might lose data on your Windows SharePoint Services sites. You must choose No, do not upgrade at this time, which results in a side-by-side installation.

Warning

You must maintain your https://companyweb Web site as a Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 installation. Upgrading the site to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is not supported.

Important

It is strongly recommended that you back up your server before you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. For more information about backing up your server, see "Backing Up and Restoring Windows Small Business Server 2003" at the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=39741).

Process Steps

Use the following process steps to install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 side-by-side with Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 on a server that is running Windows SBS 2003:

  • Step 1: Install Microsoft® .NET Framework 3.0.

  • Step 2: Install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

  • Step 3: Install the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 update package, KB 934790, if applicable.

  • Step 4: Configure Windows SharePoint Services Products and Technologies.

  • Step 5: Create a new intranet site using Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

  • Step 6: Delete the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 default Web site.

  • Step 7: Start the default Web site and the Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 https://companyweb Web site.

After you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 side-by-side with Windows SharePoint Services 2.0, Windows SBS administrative tools continue to work properly with Windows SharePoint Services 2.0, but do not interact with Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. Windows SBS repair scenarios, such as uninstalling and reinstalling Windows SharePoint Services 2.0, also work properly and do not interact with the new Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 site.

Limitations

The following is a known limitation in running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with Windows SBS:

  • The integration of incoming e-mail with Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 does not work because of a conflict with Exchange.

Step 1: Install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 requires Windows Workflow Foundation, which is a component of Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0. To install Windows Workflow Foundation, install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 from the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=77799).

Step 2: Install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

Warning

It is strongly recommended that you back up your server before you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. For more information about backing up your server, see "Backing Up and Restoring Windows Small Business Server 2003" at the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=39741).

To install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

  1. Download SharePoint.exe from the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=77800), and save it to a local disk drive.

Note

If you need the Language Pack for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, download it from the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=77801).

  1. Start SharePoint.exe.

  2. On the Microsoft License Terms page, review the licensing agreement. To continue, you must accept the agreement. Click Yes.

    1. On the Upgrade tab, select No, do not upgrade at this time.

Warning

When you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on your server, do not choose Gradual upgrade or In-place upgrade. If you do, several Windows SBS administration tools will fail, and you might lose data on your Windows SharePoint Services sites. You must choose No, do not upgrade at this time, which results in a side-by-side installation..

2. On the **Server type** tab, ensure that **Stand-alone** is selected.

3. Click the **Install Now** button.

4. When the wizard finishes, leave the **Run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard now** check box selected, and then click **Close**.

5. If you are prompted to reboot, click **Yes**.

Step 3: Install the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 update package, KB 934790, if applicable

Perform this step only if you have already installed Windows Server® Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 on your server.

For information about how to obtain and install this update, see Knowledge Base article 934790 at the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=93755).

Step 4: Configure Windows SharePoint Services Products and Technologies

    5. Click OK.

  7. On the Top Level Site Successfully Created page, click the link to the new Web site, and add it to your Favorites.

Step 6: Delete the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 default Web site

Use the following procedure to delete the default Web site (https://ServerName) that is automatically generated during Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Setup in Step 3:

To delete the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 default Web site

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.

Important

Upgrading the https://companyweb Web site to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is not supported. If you upgrade it, several Windows SBS administration tools will fail, and you might lose data on your Windows SharePoint Services site.
