Managing user templates

To manage user templates, you must be a member of the Domain Admins security group.

Microsoft® Windows® Small Business Server 2003 provides user templates that enable you to standardize common user properties, such as group memberships, disk space and e-mail quotas, Windows® SharePoint® Services site group memberships, organizational unit placement, remote access permissions, and company address information for new user accounts. Creating a user account that is based on a user template reduces the need to manually enter account properties. When creating a new user account, you enter the unique information, such as user name, e-mail alias, and password, and the new account inherits common properties from the template you apply.

Small Business Server User Templates

Access to resources in Windows Small Business Server 2003 is granted by using group memberships. Each of the four Windows Small Business Server user templates grants different levels of resource access, making it easy to create multiple user accounts quickly. While the template settings are based on the needs of a typical small business, the user templates can be modified to fit your needs. You can also create your own custom user templates.

The four Windows Small Business Server user templates are as follows:

  • User Template Accounts based on this template have access to shared folders, printers and faxes, e-mail, the Remote Web Workplace, Windows SharePoint Services, and the Internet.
  • Mobile User Template Accounts based on this template have all the permissions of the User Template and can access the network remotely through a VPN connection.
  • Power User Template Accounts based on this template have all the permissions of the Mobile User Template and can also perform delegated management tasks. They can add and manage users and groups, create and manage shared folders, and manage printers and faxes. User accounts based on the Power User template generally do not have permissions to delete or perform other destructive actions. A Small Business Power User can log on remotely to the computer running Windows Small Business Server but cannot log on locally.
  • Administrator Template Accounts based on this template have unrestricted system access.

Adding New User Templates

In addition to using or modifying the default user templates, you can create user templates by using the Add Template Wizard. The templates you create can be customized to fit your business needs. Like the default Windows Small Business Server templates, your custom user templates provide common settings for the user accounts to which they are applied.

Importing and Exporting Templates

After creating your own user templates, you can migrate them to more than one Windows Small Business Server 2003 installation by using the Import Templates Wizard and the Export Templates Wizard. These wizards enable you to create common user templates at one site and export them to other sites.
