Three types of broadband connections are available. In the My server uses list, click the broadband connection type that you want to use to connect to the Internet.
Connection type
Description
A local router with an IP address
Click this option if your broadband connection uses a local router, such as a broadband cable router or DSL router. For this connection type, the following applies:
An IP address is supplied by your ISP for the external interface (the interface that connects to the Internet) of the router.
The router is the default gateway to the Internet.
Either one or two network adapters can be installed for your server, as shown in Figure 1. If your server uses one network adapter, the router is the default gateway and firewall to the Internet. If your server uses two network adapters, the server is your default gateway and firewall to the Internet.
Important
If your router is the default gateway and firewall to the Internet, you must configure the firewall on your router or install a third-party firewall. If the router supports the UPnP framework, you can still use the wizard to configure the firewall settings for your router. Otherwise, you must manually configure the settings using the information provided in Appendix C, "Network Configuration Settings," of Getting Started.
If your connection requires authentication information, also called Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE), you must configure your router with the user name and password even if your router supports the UPnP framework. Check your router manufacturer's documentation for the configuration steps.

A broadband connection that requires a user name and password (PPPoE)
Click this option if your broadband connection requires authentication information and uses a network device such as a cable modem or DSL modem. With this connection type, the following applies:
The server is the default gateway to the Internet.
Two network adapters are required—one to connect to the local network and one to connect to the Internet, as shown in Figure 2.
The firewall on the server provides routing and network address translation (NAT) services.
Important
To allow the standard network services necessary to access the Internet, you must also enable the firewall option later in this wizard.
Note
If your broadband connection uses PPPoE, and you use a router device with an IP address, select the router option.

A direct broadband connection
Click this option if your broadband connection uses a network device such as a cable modem or DSL modem. With this connection type, the following applies:
Your server connects directly to your Internet service provider (ISP), such as a T1 connection.
The server is the default gateway to the Internet.
Two network adapters are required—one to connect to the local network and one to connect to the Internet, as shown in Figure 3.
The firewall on the server provides routing and network address translation (NAT) services.
Important
To allow the standard network services necessary for your server to access the Internet, you must also enable the firewall option later in this wizard.
