The NetBIOS domain name contains nonstandard characters

Windows Small Business Server 2003 Setup cannot install Exchange or Windows SharePoint Services during the upgrade because the NetBIOS domain name contains nonstandard characters.

You must either complete a new installation or migrate to a new computer running Windows Small Business Server 2003. For more information about completing a new installation, see Chapter 3A, “New Installation,” of Getting Started. For more information about completing a migration, see the following step-by-step instructions:

  • For information about Small Business Server 2000 or Windows 2000 Server migrations, see the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=16414).
  • For information about Small Business Server 4.5 or Windows NT 4.0 Server migrations, see the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=16415).
noteNote
The NetBIOS domain name is used in earlier versions of Windows to identify the domain, and it is also used to create your Exchange organization name. The NetBIOS domain name can only contain standard characters: A-Z, 0-9, and the hyphen (-). Additionally, it cannot be the same as the computer name, cannot contain all numbers, and cannot be longer than 15 characters.
